Beware
Of Sand Fleas While Enjoying On Beaches
Several scientific
researches and studies have been conducted
on the different species of fleas and most
of the studies related to sand fleas have
so far been very dubious. Till date effects
of sand flea bite have not been diagnosed
properly. However, sand fleas are the most
dangerous of all fleas. ‘Sand hopper’,
‘no-see-um’, ‘hop-along’
and ‘beach hopper’ are some of
the most common terms that are used to describe
sand fleas.
If you have been to the beachside at the
North Pacific area, then you probably know
what it feels like to be bitten by sand fleas.
These generally attack in groups of hundreds
and can create annoying itches and pain near
the ankle areas. The hosts that lie within
the area of 10 inches are more vulnerable
to attacks by these fleas. Such flea bites
at the seaside are generally common in summers
as this is the most favorable time of the
year for flea infestation. During winters,
these sand fleas prefer to move towards the
warm ocean waters for survival.
Pain, welts and lesions are the diseases
that are mainly afflicted by sand fleas. To
be safe and protected from them, using a repellant
on a daily basis can be of great help. However,
when it comes to water creatures, flying fish,
swordfish, whales, starfish, small fishes
and sunfish are the favorites among sand fleas.
These fleas normally attack at any particular
area of the body of the host while the other
parts of the body remain unaffected.
When these sand fleas start predation over
the body of the host, they initiate with the
outer of the host body, which is the slime
layer. The affected areas on the host body
can be identified with a non-glossy, whitened
layer that can be noticed on them. Eating
the skin membrane near the eyes area, dorsal
fins and anus, gives the sand flea entry into
the host’s body. After this, the host
is considered to be at the death end and nothing
can help him after this. Sucking the blood
and feeding over the skin and sweat glands
are the other activities of sand fleas that
follow. The left-over bodies of these hosts
are normally found in the underwater areas.
So, whenever you are enjoying near the beaches
take care of a sand fleas bite which later
can cause irritation or redness on your skin.
