Effective ways to get rid of fleas
Fleas are little
in size but can be a big trouble for you and
your pet. They are parasites and love to suck
human and animal blood. Flea bites causes
FAD, Flea Allergy Dermatitis, which is a skin
allergy, irritation and hair loss. In animals,
it might cause anemia due to loss of excessive
blood and cause death too. How to get rid
of fleas will be the only question in your
mind when you will detect flea infestation.
Preventive measures can offer you some help
to get rid of fleas. Many chemical and natural
methods can be employed for flea infestation.
Natural methods:-
1) There are certain natural substances to
which fleas are allergic like Neem seed oil.
It should be rubbed on the skin coat of the
pet which impair the development of fleas.
Anti-bacterial property of Neem seed oil can
kill fleas and relieve the pet of the skin
irritation.
2) DE or Diatomaceous Earth is another natural
product for treating outdoor fleas. It is
fine fossilized shell of organism called Diatom
which when sprayed on the yard can kills the
fleas by attacking their outer shell. Nematode
which is freeze dried earth worms can also
be sprayed on the field which will kill the
fleas by stopping their growth.
3) Essential oils from trees like tea tree,
eucalyptus, cedar, and citronella can be used
after diluting them in water as fleas are
repulsive to such oils.
4) Flea collar and flea combs can also be
used making your pet flea free. Flea collar
might cause some irritation on the neck, so
first try it on your pet and then use it.
5) Herbal shampoos containing Neem and oatmeal
extracts can also be used for bathing pet
as water kills fleas.
Chemical methods:-
1) Flea shampoos contain insecticides which
are very effective in killing fleas. Bathe
your pet regularly with flea shampoo as water
drowns fleas and can kill a large number of
fleas this way.
2) Veterinarian can guide you by prescribing
oral medication and medicated shampoos that
your pet can take for fighting fleas.
3) Wash the bedding and the areas mostly used
by your pet with water or spray Insect Growth
Regulators, insecticides like sorptive dust
which kills the fleas by dehydration can also
be used.
4) Beside these, you need to thoroughly clean
the house and surrounding with a vacuum cleaner
or wash it with water.
Chemical methods should be used with precaution
as it might cause some health hazard. You
can use various natural and chemical methods
to get rid of fleas and repeat the treatment
if necessary.
